What graduate classes are offered at U of M?

The University of Michigan is home to a large collection of strong graduate programs. There are renowned faculty teaching courses all over campus. Students are encouraged to explore interests outside of Mechanical Engineering. The Rackham Graduate School maintains a list of all graduate degree programs and courses offered on the Programs of Study website. Students should also consult the website of the academic department where the course is being offered.

ME Course Information. The courses offered by the Mechanical Engineering department can be found in three places: (1) the Rackham Graduate School website, (2) the College of Engineering website, and (3) the ME Department website. All locations should include the same information.

When can I register for classes?

The Office of the Registrar maintains deadlines and resources relevant to course enrollment. Current students will have the opportunity to register for the upcoming term during the last month of the semester. You should be particularly mindful of deadlines for dropping and adding classes, withdrawing from classes, and for payment of fees. Typically the drop/add deadline will be three weeks after the first day of class.

How do I register for classes?

Students at the University of Michigan register for classes using Wolverine Access. Before the start of registration, the Registrar's Office will release the course offerings for the term. These courses will now appear in Wolverine Access. At this point, students are able to start “Backpacking.”

"Backpacking" is a common term at the University of Michigan. Backpacking is similar to a shopping cart for online buying. You have the ability to store all of the classes you might be interested in taking during the term. Then after further deliberation, you can purchase (a.k.a. register) your courses.

Course and Enrollment Requirements:

  • For the Fall and Winter term, the ME departmental policy requires all pre-candidate PhD students to be enrolled for at least 9 credits and all candidate PhD students to be enrolled in 8 credits of ME995 unless the student holds a GSI, GSRA, or GSSA appointment.
  • A Master's student must be enrolled in at least 8 credits to be considered a full-time student.
  • All PhD students must complete 6 hours of research in the first 3 terms.
  • Graduate students must maintain a B average.
  • A B- is required for all math and cognate courses.
  • A C- is required for all other graduate level courses counting towards the degree.

Permission to Enroll/Electronic Overrides

Many classes at the University require electronic permission to register. In addition, an electronic permission is required to register for any class that is full or has a waiting list. If Wolverine Access denies a request to register because an electronic permission is needed, an error message will appear that says an instructor or departmental permission is required. If this occurs, please contact the student services staff in the department, school, or college that is offering the class which needs a permission to register. The Academic Services Office (contact can only give electronic permission to register for Mechanical Engineering courses. 

Please note that it may be necessary to wait until the first class meeting (which should be attended) to obtain permission from the instructor to register. Each department or school/college has its own procedures for granting permission, but ME students are welcome in most courses around the University.

Reminder: Requesting permission to enroll does not complete the registration process for classes. Once an electronic override notification email has been received, it is still necessary to register for the class using Wolverine Access.

Waiting lists

Wolverine Access allows students to put themselves on waiting lists for full classes. Once a class fills and a waiting list is generated, the class does not re-open automatically if seats become available. Open seats are filled with students from the waiting list in order. Students on the waiting list will receive an Electronic Override email granting permission to register if seats become available.

Withdrawing from a class

At the beginning of each semester, there is a drop/add period during which students are allowed to register through Wolverine Access without penalty. Deadlines are set University-wide by the Office of the Registrar, please refer to their "Student Registration Deadlines" on the Academic calendar for specific dates. Changes after this deadline are only possible in certain exceptional situations (e.g., serious illness). To make a change to a schedule after the drop/add deadline, it is necessary to complete an Elections Worksheet (available in the Academic Services Office), obtain written approval from the instructor and from a Academic Services Office staff member, and submit the Worksheet to the Office of the Registrar located in Pierpont Commons. If it is necessary to withdraw from a class after the drop/add deadline, the class will continue to appear on the transcript, with a grade of “W” (for withdraw). Mini-courses that run less than the length of the full semester have their own drop/add deadlines.

A brief review:

  • During the first three weeks of a full term (or two weeks of a half term), Wolverine Access registration remains open, and you can add or drop classes/sections. Your transcript will not record this activity. 
  • Between three and nine weeks into a full term (or up to the fourth week of a half term), you need to have a Elections Worksheet signed by the professor of the class and by the ASO staff (available in 2206 GG Brown). A "W" will be recorded on your transcript indicating that you dropped the class, and your tuition may not be adjusted.
  • After nine weeks into the term (after the fourth week of the half term), only under extenuating circumstances (e.g., severe health problems, prolonged illness, death in the family, jury duty) may changes to your schedule be considered. You must submit a petition for modification that explains the reasons for your request along with a Elections Worksheet. The petition for modification form must be signed first by the instructor of the class, then by an ASO staff member, then reviewed by a College of Engineering administrator. The petition must be accompanied by documentation of the extenuating circumstances. 


Grade Requirements & Important Rules:

  • All courses must be letter-graded with the exception of research credits, which have a grade of "S" (satisfactory) or "U" (unsatisfactory). Minimum Grade Requirements for degree credit are:

Cognates: B-

Math: B-

All other coursework counted toward degree: C-

  • Distance Learning courses (listed as sections 881 in Wolverine Access) may not be used for credit toward the ME graduate degrees.
  • ME599 courses (Special Topics) must be taught by a ME faculty to satisfy a requirement. If not taught by a ME faculty, the ME599 course may be used to satisfy an ME 4xx level requirement.
  • Seminar courses must be letter graded. The credits accepted from seminar courses do not equal the number of hours for the course. For a 3 credit hour seminar, 2 credits are earned and for a 2 credit hour seminar, 1 credit is earned toward the master's degree. 1 credit hour seminar courses do not count toward the degree. Only 1 seminar course may be used to meet degree requirements.
  • ME450, ME490, ME495 and ME481 cannot be taken for graduate credit (because they are undergraduate courses).
  • Only 6 credits of ME590 can be counted towards the MSE degree requirements. ME590 credits do not fulfill the 500 level coursework requirement. It is considered 400 level work.
  • International MSE StudentsIf you choose to elect courses that are not required for the completion of your MSE degree, the ME department will not support an extension of your visa for the purpose of completing the remainder of your degree requirements. Should this occur, it is possible that you will not be able to finish your ME master's degree prior to the completion of your stay in the United States. To avoid this complication, please ensure that all of your elected courses are relevant to your degree. Likewise, the ME department will not support a reduced course load letter if the remainder of the student's courses are not relevant to the MSE degree


Acceptable Math List

Any graduate engineering-related mathematics course for which MATH 215 and/or MATH 216 are prerequisites may satisfy a math requirement. The list below contains several commonly elected 400 level courses. Any 500 level or above Math course will satisfy a math requirement. Check the Math Department's website for more election options.

Important Rules to Note:

  • Only one of Math 417, 419, or 420 may be used to satisfy the math requirement.
  • Only one of Math 450 or 454 may be taken to satisfy the math requirement.
  • In either case above, more than one may be taken if one is to satisfy a math requirement and then one is taken to satisfy the cognate requirement after 6 credits of  math have been selected.
  • ME564 and Math417 may not be taken together for math credit.

Cognate Courses

The ME department recognizes the value of intellectual breadth in graduate education and the importance of formal graduate study in areas beyond the student's field of specialization. Cognate courses are those that are in a discipline or area different from a student's field of study but are related or connected with some aspect of this field. More specifically, cognates are graduate level courses and may be taken within the College of Engineering or in other departments on campus. Acceptable departments are Mathematics, Statistics, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology. The minimum acceptable grade for a cognate course is a B-. If the course is not a graduate level engineering, Mathematics, Statistics, Physics, Chemistry, or Biology course, then the course must be petitioned to the Academic Services Office to count toward the cognate requirement.

The following is a list of some useful cognate rules:

  • ENGR courses do not fulfill the cognate requirement.
  • MFG and AUTO courses that are cross-listed with ME do not count.
  • ME courses that are cross-listed with other engineering departments do count. 
  • CHE 580, FIN/ES 629, and MFG 599 will not fulfill the cognate requirement.
  • 500-level ENTR courses will not fulfill the cognate requirement. 
  • EECS460 may be elected to fill the cognate requirement but students may not use both EECS460 and ME461 toward their degree requirements. 
  • Any course can be petitioned to count as a cognate.
